Technical Director Quick Command Reference
This is a quick reference guide to the Technical Director commands and terms. |

| Cut |
 | Hard transition on the switcher. |
| Dissolve |
| Soft transition on the switcher. Length of dissolve can be varied. |
| Dolly Left / Right |
| Physically move camera left or right, unusally online. |
| Dutch Shot |
| Artistic Shot. Tilting camera left or right. |
| Effect |
| Wipe pattern or graphic for dissolve. |
| Focus / Check Focus |
| Usually offline. Camera zooms in all the way to subject to adjust focus then resets their shot. |
| Follow Shot |
| Follow subject as they move about maintaining shot / focus. |
| Follow Focus |
| Maintaining focus as subject moves about, but not using zoom to maintain frame. |
| Follow Zoom |
| Using zoom servo to maintain desired shot as you follow subject about. |
| Full Wide / Big Wide |
| Zoom out to full zoom of lens. |
| Go |
| Start predetermined motion/move. Act of taking shot to live. |
| Head Shot |
| Close up of subject's head. |
| Head to Toe Shot |
| Fill frame with subject from head to toe with a little extra area around feet and head. |
| Hold |
| Stop movment and hold shot |
| Iris Up / Down |
| Open or close the iris. |
| Knee Shot |
| Shot from just above the knee to the top of the head. |
| Pan Left / Right |
| Left or right motion. Follow subject to the left or right. |
| Pull |
| Zoom out. |
| Push |
| Zoom in. |
| Rack Focus |
| Artistic Shot. Where shot is taken out of focus online. |
| Ready / Stand By |
| Warning to camera op to be ready because their shot is next. |
| Roll |
| Start playback or start recording device. |
| Smash / Crash / Slap Zoom |
| Artistic Shot. Zoom servo is disengaged and zoom is operated manually either in or out as fast as the operator can. |
| Speed / Rolling |
| Tape / Playback operator's response when footage is playing or when VTR's have established a predetermined pre-roll. |
| Stand By |
| Hold the shot or wait to begin a move. |
